The Senate on Wednesday went into a
rowdy session when the lawmakers of the All progressives Congress (APC) and the
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) disagreed over the payment of 5,000 naira to unemployed Nigerian youths.
This
prayer was intended addition by Philip Aduda (FCT senatorial district) in
a motion titled the urgent need to curb the soaring rate of unemployment in
Nigeria but was bluntly rejected by the APC senators.
The lawmakers screamed a loud ‘NO’ when Goddwill Akpabio, the minority leader moved to second the prayer raised by Aduda and when Akpabio made several attempts, the screams only grew louder.
Eventually,
the senate president, Bukola Saraki put the question which resulted to a loud
‘yay’ from the PDP senators and the APC countered which caused it to
be ruled out.
However,
in reaction to this, Babajide Omoworare proposed a prayer stating that the
funds and management of the SURE-P must be accounted for which was eventually
passed when Saraki putt the question.
Sure-P
was introduced in the immediate past government led by former president,
Goodluck Jonathan.
While
giving remarks on the issue of unemployment, Saraki urged the senators to
unemployment very seriously.
He
said: “We should stay above party line on this issue that is so
important. We have seen growth in the last years but this has not translated to
employment
“Government
alone cannot do it, the private sector has a role and the enabling environment
must be created,” he said.
